Mesoscale Structure of Zooplankton in the California Current
نویسنده
چکیده
We are examining how populations of euphausiids maintain high concentrations in coastal regions of the California Current despite the highly advective field. We are testing the hypothesis that mesoscale eddies and coastal counter currents create retention cells, where growth and reproduction are rapid and mortality is reduced. The immediate objective is to produce a data set on the biomass, population genetics, and physiological condition of the targeted euphausiids across the boundary between the eutrophic inshore of the California current and the oligotrophic central gyre waters. This work is supported by ONR Biological Oceanography.

Preliminary studies on the impact of fish cage culture rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) on zooplankton structure in the southwestern Caspian Sea
The ecosystem of the Caspian Sea have been strikingly changed by human activities. This area has undergone significant ecological alterations and serious environmental degradation since the beginning of 1990s. The impact of fish cage culture on the zooplankton community was studied in the southwestern Caspian Sea, off Jafrud during January to April 2013. A total of 12 zooplankton belonging to 9...

The Northern California Current (NCC) is a seasonally productive and open ecosystem. It is home to both a diverse endemic community and to seasonally transient species. Productivity and food web structure vary seasonally, interannually, and decadally due to variability in coastal upwelling, climate-scale physical processes, and the migratory species entering the system. The composition of the p...
متن کاملZooplankton anomalies in the California Current system before and during the warm ocean conditions of 2005
[1] Zooplankton in the California Current had large anomalies in biomass and composition in 2005. The zone most strongly affected extended from northern California to southern British Columbia, where zooplankton biomass was low from spring through autumn, community composition showed reduced dominance by northern origin taxa, and life cycles of some species shifted to earlier in the year. Altho...
